Darren

Darren joined up last year and quickly became a regular in our mid-day and early evening classes. Thanks for being part of the #3rdstreettribe!

How did you get into boxing and how did you find yourself at 3rd Street?

“I recently moved to SF from Toronto and needed a new gym. After doing Crossfit for a few years, I wanted to try something new. I’m a fan of MMA and thought boxing would be a great way to get in shape and learn some of the fundamentals of fighting.”

What's the best part about boxing? Why do you train?

“I train because it’s fun and it’s important to stay in shape. The best part is watching yourself improve after putting in the hard work.”

Any words of advice or encouragement for newbies?

“The most important thing to do is just show up. Nobody ever regrets going to the gym. Don’t over think it, just go.”

Maleenee

Maleenee has been part of the crew since Bonnie taught our beginners class, and Ed would shout “ahh turn it upp!” in class 😛 #3rdstreettribe

How did you get into boxing and how did you find yourself at 3rd Street?

“I tried my first class on ClassPass never having boxed before. I loved the instructors I met (shoutout to Ed and Bonnie) and got hooked so I bought a membership!”

What's the best part about boxing? Why do you train?

“The sweat, the variety, and the feeling of accomplishment after each workout. I've been coming for about 2 years now and still every class is different and challenging. I used to dance and it feels similar because of the technique and coordination, but now I sweat a lot more and punch things.”

Any words of advice or encouragement for newbies?

“Everyone started as a newbie so everyone around you gets it and is happy to help. Just keep coming and you'll see and feel the improvement.”

Chaun

Chaun has been part of the #3rdstreettribe for 4 years and counting! 💪

How did you get into boxing and how did you find yourself at 3rd Street?

“As a 12-year-old, I stumbled upon Friday Night Fights on ESPN. I became mesmerized by the action, the skill, the stories, and most importantly, the heart of the fighters. Years later, I finally started training when I graduated college and moved to Philly. Since then, training has been a core part of my identity. When I moved to SF, I sought out a gym to join, so I signed up for a boot camp at 3rd Street Gym. Immediately, I knew this was the right gym for me. It's been four years and counting...”

What's the best part about boxing? Why do you train?

“You discover who you are when you push yourself to your limits. The best part about boxing is that you're always rediscovering your limits. The first time I sparred, I learned so much about my will to push forward, no matter how exhausted my legs were. Though I'm (mostly) done with sparring, I still love training to stay in shape and to let out a bit of aggression.”

Any words of advice or encouragement for newbies?

“Just. Say. Yes. Boxing is one of the best full body workouts that you can have. Plus, you won't find a boxing gym in SF with a better set of trainers and a more welcoming community. There are classes for all levels and, unlike other gyms that I've attended, you'll learn proper technique at 3rd Street Gym.”
