How did you get into boxing and how did you find yourself at 3rd Street?
“As a Filipino-American woman, I'm a big Manny Pacquaio fan. Growing up, I would watch his fights. Watching his drive and determination while he was in the ring always inspired me. It was then in my early 20's that I became more interested to try boxing as fitness. Before I started boxing, I would go jogging on the weekends from my house to At&T Park. I would always pass by Third Street Gym, which started to spark my interest. One day I was going for my normal jog and I stopped into checkout about the service and classes. On January 2016, I took a beginner class, and the rest is history.”
What's the best part about boxing? Why do you train?
“The best part about boxing is wearing the gloves and throwing some jabs. For me, personally, it's very therapeutic. In my everyday life, I work a full-time job and I'm going to school part-time. There are moments where my workload can be stressful. When I wear my gloves and throw some jabs at a punching bag, I feel more relaxed and stress-free, and it's very relieving. I train to feel healthy in my body. In the past, my motive would be to work out so I could feel slimmer. Now, my mindset is to feel healthy in my body while working on muscle toning.”
Any words of advice or encouragement for newbies?
“Whatever goal you're trying to set for yourself, don't be intimidated. Boxing is a work in progress, so just trust the process and you'll find your drive.”
