Any words of advice or encouragement for newbies?

How did you get into boxing and how did you find yourself at 3rd Street?

“I box because I want to learn how to fight. I fight to face my fears and harden my resolve. I know if I come thru for myself in the gym and in the ring, then I'll improve how I come thru for myself and others in every day life. I don't want fear of getting hurt to stop me from taking the right action, so that's why I show up. The 3rd Street community is really special, you can sense it the moment you walk in the door. The first day I showed up for sparring class, I noticed everyone wanted to be there and put in the work. I noticed the 415 Boxing kids putting in work and their dads supporting them - people want to come here to grow, so I knew it was a place where I could grow too.”

What's the best part about boxing? Why do you train?

“Life lessons. When I first started, getting hit in the face legitimately made me want to cry. In life, I don't want to let ‘getting hit in the face’ affect me. I want to be someone who says ok, I took a hit, but I'm going to dig deep and keep going. I want to be more humble. I train because I like who I am becoming. I wake up early and run. I come through after a long day of work, toughen up, and spar. This is who I want to be.”

Any words of advice or encouragement for newbies?

“Just focus on showing up and putting in your best work during the hour that you have. Train every day. If you just focus on putting in your best work one hour at a time, all those hours add up, and I suspect that with time you will really like who you are becoming.”
